Teach English in Xiacun Zhen - Xinyu Shi

This unit gives us two examples of a ESA lesson in class through video demonstration. On the one hand, in the first video the teacher starts teaching without an Engage phase and starts teaching without giving clear directions what the students need to do. During the Study phase he does not write the correct negative form of the modal verbs as he misses out the apostrophe, which he adds only in the end of the lesson. When giving them an individual exercise to work on, he does not give explanation and he could not know if the students have understood the task. During the Active phase he divides the students in team but he does not explain the rules of the game clearly and he gets distracted keeping the score. On the other hand, in the second video the teacher starts the lesson by introducing himself and asking the names of the students. His desk has already been prepared for the engage phase, as there were blank spaces in order to elicit vocabulary and grammar structure. During the Study phase he writes the new structures on the board, highlighting the forms of the modal verbs and also explain the meanings and their usage, also discusses the difference between writing and speaking of some words. Then he dedicates some time for the students to ask and answer some questions related to the topic. The teacher also gives a task to work in pairs, showing an example of the task on the board and discussing it in order to see if the students have understood what they need to do. Last, he uses a mill drill for the Active phase, where students get a lot of time to talk.
