This is a unit about teaching receptive skills- reading and listening, who are equally important. We read and listen in different ways for different purpose. Prediction- a glance for predicting the general idea about the content, scanning- quick listening or reading to get specific information, skimming- quick listening or reading for general idea, detail information- getting to know details, and deduction- understanding and deducing the meaning from the context. When teaching receptive skills, teachers need to make sure potential problematic vocabulary is taught in advance, authentic and non-authentic texts are carefully selected, topics focus on students' interested, new interest/enthusiasm is created, and tasks to promote and check for understanding.
