This unit covers the concept of receptive skills and how we can go about teaching receptive skills lessons. The two receptive skills presented here in this unit are listening and reading. There are a number of potential issues that teacher should be aware of during the teaching and learning of receptive skills and they are mainly in connection with the language contained in the text, the topic of the text or dialogue and the tasks the students will perform. How different specialist skill are needed for reading and listening successfully is another issue that the teachers should be aware, as the students' level of comprehension and understanding vary and is based upon their pre-existing knowledge, backgrounds, etc. Reading and listening as receptive skills are equally important and wherever possible we should try to incorporate them into our lessons in order to have a balance approach.
