The reason why I choose a TEFL course Being a TEFL certified teacher is one of the gateways to teaching English as a second language worldwide. It's not only for native English speakers but also for non-native English speakers who are interested in teaching English abroad. While the quality of English reaches the standard of teaching, the TEFL certificate has become an international standard when it comes to the actual practice of teaching English overseas. From a TEFL course, except for the certificate you might get through your efforts, you can retain the theories, methods and useful tips to support your teaching in the class at the same time. Besides, a TEFL certification course will help you to be familiar with some of these concepts and best practices about managing tricky classroom questions. What I have learned from a TEFL course There are 20 units in a TEFL course, which have gradually developed my knowledge, without overwhelming me with too much information. Due to this design, I find that I could follow the course very easily and have developed a good working knowledge of English grammar and a variety of teaching skills and techniques that help me make clear how and what to present in the classroom. The 120-hour online TEFL course introduces two main kinds of subjects. One kind of subjects is related to teaching skills, which includes the qualities a good teacher should have, teaching theories, methodologies, techniques, classroom management, lesson planning, how to choose books and lesson materials and how to test and evaluate the progress of students. Another kind of subjects is language awareness, which covers the basic grammar that is commonly taught in EFL, such as the parts of speech, the tense system and other items such as pronunciation. Although I am an experienced teacher, I have never tried to make a summary of teaching skills and basic grammar. In my mind, I was thinking that practice is more important than the theory. However, when I was reading through the units and doing the tests, I realized the theory is as important as the practice. What makes me impressed most is the teaching method “ESA”, namely Engage-Study-Activate, which is put forward in unit 3. As far as I’m concerned, engage-stage means that the teacher engages the students. This stage is like warm-up and makes students feel relaxed and absorbed into class easily. Study-stage means that students study the language. This stage requires teachers to teach vocabulary or grammar. Normally it’s boring for most students. But there are many useful tips throughout this course to help teachers make the study-stage fun. Activate-stage means that students put language into production through some activities. This method made me think deeply when I first knew it. Compared with the previous lessons I’ve given before, I found sometimes there was something wrong with the order. My method was sometimes ESA, but sometimes it’s EAS. When I used EAS, the effect of that lesson was obviously on a lower quality. What’s more, the techniques of each stage are very conducive. Summary Whatever you are an experienced or inexperienced teacher, you should take the TEFL course. It’s not only good for your job hunting but also beneficial for your whole teaching career.
