93. Readers are leaders: how to instill a love for reading in children? Reading is probably one of the most important skills a child can acquire. And gaining a passion for reading will make it all the more. Those skills will later translate to bigger and better things and will hopefully give your child advantages not only in learning but also will aid in finding new adventure in a good book. To ensure that the spark is ignited in your child sooner rather than later, you want to start reading to your child preferably as soon as possible. According to research “The Sooner, the Better: Early Reading to Children,” published in the Sage Journals, “the findings indicate that starting early can support the development of children’s language abilities and that the onset of shared reading seems to a good and specific indicator of the overall home literacy environment. Consequently, parents should be encouraged to start reading to their children when they are very young – the sooner, the better” (Niklas et al). Reading to children as early as 6 months is highly encouraged and could have lasting benefits that will ensure their future pursuit and love of learning. In addition to that, you can also take your child and expose them to the library. Visiting the library on a regular basis is not only a way to bond with your child but builds another way to fall in love with reading. There are activities in a library such as story times and exploring the many different topics that one would not get regularly at home. In addition, there will be thousands of books at your fingertips without having to buy new books and you have a librarian available to assist in discovering new books and new topics. Also, you should read as well. As the saying goes, “monkey see, monkey do.” By reading to your child and with your child, you are creating routines and habits that will be a part of their learning foundation. In addition to that, discussion on the book being read as well as the topics and themes of the story are all important in developing analytical and critical thinking skills. And limiting screen time is also encouraged. Television and computer time can be fun, however, studies have shown that those habits tend to reduce focus and attention. Solid habits like reading will lead to more beneficial learning in the future. In conclusion, start reading to child as soon as you can. And read with them for as long as you can. By instilling a love of reading through some simple steps, you are setting up your child hopefully for a successful academic and knowledge filled future. And an added side effect is that reading will also open doors to new worlds across the globe or new adventures with swash buckling pirates or space aliens from across the galaxy.
