Although a TEFL certificate is not always required to teach English aboard, I personally believe that anyone considering the job should complete a TEFL course. There are a number of reasons why I believe so. I also believe that teaching English abroad is a rewarding job and a great experience to have. Having a TEFL certificate will mean that you will always have the option of teaching English abroad, even if you don’t plan on making it your lifelong career. If you’re considering teaching English abroad, I believe that you should complete a TEFL course, even if you aren’t required to. After completing a TEFL course myself, I know have knowledge of a range of topics which I didn’t have before. Having this knowledge means I will be much more prepared when I do have the opportunity to teach English abroad. This benefits not only the teacher, but the students. Having sound knowledge of how to teach English as a foreign language will benefit the teacher as they will understand what they are teaching and thereby be more confident in their teaching. It would also benefit the students as the teacher would know what and how to teach them, meaning they’re being taught the right content and are also more able to understand it as it would be taught in a more effective manner. A teacher cannot teach effectively without first learning about the subject themselves. Not completing a TEFL course would be a disservice to those you’re trying to help: your students. As English is becoming a more global language, there is an increasingly high demand for EFL teachers. Teaching English as a foreign language does not have to be a lifelong career. Many people take on the jobs while they’re young for the experience. It provides you with the opportunity to travel, while also working and helping others. It is a rewarding job which allows you to combine a love for travel with the ability to help others learn a new language. A TEFL certificate does not expire. This means that, after having competed a TEFL course, you can choose to take a TEFL job whenever you please. If you want to use it right away, or later in life, you will always have that as an option. A TEFL certificate will always increase your chances of obtaining a job. It will make you stand out amongst other applicants who don’t have that qualification. It also doesn’t require too much time or money. There are many TEFL course options available. You can find them for a relatively affordable price, and most only take a few weeks or months to complete. You also have the option of taking the course online. I believe that this isn’t too much of a sacrifice for the valuable information that it provides you with. You learn about essential teaching and classroom management strategies which will make you better prepared for a teaching role, especially if you have never taught before and have no experience, which is the case for many people. After completing a TEFL course myself, I now understand that teaching English is much more difficult and complex than some may assume. The course I took only covered the basics, and it was still quite extensive and informative, but I definitely feel more prepared and confident to take on a teaching position. Anybody considering EFL teaching should be thinking about the students, and how they can improve their own skills and knowledge in order to provide students with a better learning experience. A TEFL course will help them achieve that.
