Unit 10 provided great examples of what makes for a successful and effective lesson,and what mistakes can be made that lead to an ineffective learning environment. First, the attitude, manner and teaching style of the teacher has a very big affect on a lesson. In the first video the teacher did not come across as friendly and he spoke very quickly; right away the students appeared to be uncomfortable and confused. This only increased as the lesson went on since the language point of the lesson was never clearly explained and proper instructions of the activities were never provided. Furthermore, when mistakes were made by the students or when the students could not answer the questions the teacher appeared frustrated and he did not try to encourage them by taking another approach. The second video was a great example of an good learning environment. Before the lesson began the teacher introduces himself, greets the class and learns everyone's names; on top of this he had a smile on his face the entire time which made him seem approachable. When it came time for the lesson to begin the teach maintained a clear speaking voice and spoke at a slower pace so the students were able to understand him. He also made it clear what the lesson would be for that day and continually checked in with the students at different stages to make sure the material was being understood. In the second lesson, the teacher also knew the appropriate times to correct the students and when to monitor their work. All of these factors allowed for a more successful class; the students were comfortable, willing to participate (speaking, answering questions, taking notes) and were able to learn the material.
