Teaching is considered as an activity of imparting knowledge, skills, attitude and value from one person to another. The one who is more knowledgeable and skilled and imparts the knowledge, skills, attitude and value is the teacher whilst the other person who receives the knowledge, skills, attitude and value is the learner. Teachers play some important roles in the school and below are some of them; First and foremost, when we think of classroom we usually think of the instruction role of the teacher. The conventional view of the classroom teacher is a person who transmits knowledge to pupils. Guided by the course book, syllabus and curriculum and the teacher must determine what knowledge is important. Then the teacher tells the students what they must know through various methods such as lectures, storytelling, demonstration, discussion, the use of authentic and creative materials. Adding to that, evaluating students’ achievement in the whole instructional programme is a role of the teacher. It is the role of the teacher to conduct effective assessment of the student’s achievement through tests. This will enable the teacher determine the extent and the rate of the students’ progress, to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the students so that appropriate remedial measures could be instituted, to reward and encourage students and to inform parents of the child’s progress. Furthermore, the teacher plays an administrative or management role in the classroom. At the classroom level, just as in the school, teachers need to exercise efficient management over the pupil or learners, the resources at their disposal, and the various programs of learning to ensure that learning proceeds efficiently. The administrative role relate to planning, policy making, organizing, student control, students accountability, interpreting the syllabus and time table. In addition to that, the teacher’s role is to help his students to develop their individual potential for intellectual, moral and physical growth to the end that this will ensure the student become free individual within our democratic ways of life. The teacher can ensure this by promoting a cordial relationship with the student. Also the teacher plays the role of guidance and counseling. This can be done by the teacher monitoring educational progress of the student and advise or assist those who are under achieving. The teacher may also help students to make educational choices of subject course or institution as well as career choices which greatly influence their future. Lastly, the teacher must discipline his class. He must act as a disciplinarian by creating order both in the classroom and outside it, and the teacher is expected to show good example in this area of orderliness and cleanliness. A learner must be controlled by force or persuasion but not hatred. It is fair to conclude that the teacher’s responsibilities cannot be easily define or overlooked. What is certain however is that there are fundamental roles and duties of the teacher which have far reaching complications on the whole educational process. As a professional, dealing with intellectual, physical and moral development of children within the context of an organized institution and community. The teacher needs to know and pay these roles conscientiously if he or she is to function effectively.
