The motivation for students and teachers in a classroom is important to build an effective and constructive learning environment. When students and teachers are motivated, the learning that is conducted is usually effective as people tend to learn better in this sort of environment. There are many factors that affect motivation in the classroom. The English teacher's personal qualities are a factor that can largely determine this, be it positive or negative. There are many different qualities and methods that determine how teachers enhance classroom environments. These include establishing rapport, understanding the behavior of students, determining when to interject oneself into activities. Establishing Rapport is a quality a teacher can provide which can largely motivate a classroom. When an English teacher develops a relaxed atmosphere and is able to get along with students, the students feel comfortable and confident in applying themselves to the lesson and activities. Students provide a large factor in determining the atmosphere of a classroom, but the English teacher's personal qualities can enhance and further the motivation throughout. When establishing Rapport it is important for teachers to be positive and to show personal interest in the students. Without these qualities, students may find themselves less interested and less involved in a classroom. Once a healthy rapport is established with students, motivation and a greater ability to learn is made. Understanding the behavior of students and managing classrooms is an important quality for an English teacher to have when trying to motivate students. No classroom will be perfect with multiple students as not every student will get along with each other, or work well with each other. A teacher who has the ability to identify the different behaviors of students, and are able to manage or adapt lessons, greatly enhancing the productivity of students. Teachers can separate or combine student groups, and with the correct understanding are able to make effective and motivated learning groups. When behavioral problems occur the teacher has the responsibility to act quickly to mediate further trouble from occurring. From this, the teacher has the responsibility to focus on the behavior and not the student as this may lead to affect overall motivation. Participating in activities or letting students run activities is an important factor for teachers to be able to understand. For many lessons and activities, the teacher will have to be able to provide a clear understanding of the information that is to be practiced. For many activities, it could be beneficial for the teacher to step back and allow the students to work and understand the content together. Students often find it motivating when working and doing activities with each other. Having an overbearing teacher can distract or make students feel under pressure. Thus it is important for English teachers to understand when it is important to let the students run things for a bit, and only interject when situations occur where the teacher's help or guidance would be beneficial. Overall there are many personal qualities that can affect motivation in a classroom. It is important to identify that every class and every lesson is different and being able to adapt is beneficial. Without the ability to understand and implement this, the teacher's personal qualities can have an increased chance of motivation. Rapport, understanding student behavior and teacher participation in activities are all important qualities for English teachers, but there are multiple other qualities and situations that would be considered. Each situation has multiple ways for a teacher to handle, and each teacher has their own qualities which can enhance the overall motivation. It is up to the teacher whether or not they correctly manage each situation and move on.
