Tefl article - TEFL English as a Global Language #266 - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT

The 19th century witnessed the onset of the industrial revolution, given rise through a symbiosis with advanced means of conducting intercontinental trade. For the most part, it was British explorers, pioneers and entrepreneurs who were opening the gates to the outside world in search of cheaper and more exotic resources and raw materials. Today, the colonization of these bountiful regions of the globe which formed the British Empire has not only left the imprint of our culture and civilization, but also the English language. Further promoted by the economic and cultural influence of the U.S, post WWII, English has progressively become the most widely recognized international language. In our current, globalized world, the access to recourses such as technology,...  [Read more]

Motivating Students No name supplied - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT

While it may be a teacher's dream to instruct a class full of naturally enthusiastic students, the reality of the matter is that only a handful of students are motivated to learn on their own. In fact, many students need or expect their teachers to inspire and motivate them: 'Effective learning in the classroom depends on the teacher's ability ' to maintain the interest that brought students to the course in the first place' (Ericksen, 1978, p.3). Therefore, whatever level of motivation students may have brought to the classroom will be changed by what goes on in the classroom which leaves a great responsibility on teachers. One strategy teachers can employ to motivate their students is to monopolize on the existing needs of students. Students may have enrolled in a certain...  [Read more]

The Internet as Teacher?s Aide Samara Akers - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT

Throughout the ITTT course, the main suggestion for finding supplemental materials is to search through the school's resource library. There are obvious benefits to this: the staff may be able to direct you easily to what you are looking for, the materials can easily be photocopied (if that is an option), and the materials can be chosen as the need arises during the class. However, there is a whole other world of materials available on-line as well. While there are many places where Internet access is impossible, the teacher will probably be aware of this before arriving and could do some preparation and bring ideas and materials with them. For an isolated school, the teacher can also then cheaply and easily provide the resource library with new and updated activities, ...  [Read more]

Pronunciation problems in Thailand Colleen Moffatt - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT

During my first week at the TEFL course in Phuket, Thailand, I began to notice that the pronunciation of the Thai students was lacking a bit. I do not blame this condition on the teachers, nor on the students themselves, but the pronunciation predicament immediately stuck out to me as a problem for which I would like to find some resolution. For this reason, I decided to look further into the difficulties Thai students have when learning such a widely- used foreign language as English. What I found was that most of the pronunciation problems stem from the vast differences the two languages contain. For many teachers and students alike, the dissimilarities become so numerous that they easily begin to overwhelm everyone involved in the process of learning a new language. But...  [Read more]

Games in the Classroom Kamil Kıroğ - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT

'There is a common perception that all learning should be serious and solemn in nature, and that if one is having fun and there is hilarity and laughter, then it is not really learning. This is a misconception. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same time. One of the best ways of doing this is through games.' says Lee Su Kim in his article, 'Creative Games for the Language Class.' He adds a list of the advantages of using games in the classroom. His list is,'1. Games are a welcome break from the usual routine of the language class. 2. They are motivating and challenging.3. Learning a language requires a great deal of effort. Games help students to make and sustain the effort of learning.4. Games provide language practice in the various skills-...  [Read more]
